TestTip: Extensibility Series #1

Test
Mentor is the fastest, most comprehensive Java component testing
tools on the market. Test Mentor allows users to easily extend
the functionality letting users customize the way they test
their project's components. And, with Test Mentor, users never
have to invest in learning a proprietary language.
This is the first in a series of technical tips providing
information about extending and customizing Test Mentor for
your project's testing needs.
This month's tip: "Roll your own custom validation policy"

One
of the most important aspects of component testing, besides
forcing unhandled exceptions to be revealed, is to assert
that after application of one or more stimuli, your components
under test are actually in the expected state. Validation
is concerned with ensuring that object properties (static
and instance variables, as well as derived values) match expected
values.
The most common validation pattern is the comparison of an
actual state vs. an expected state. Test Mentor provides a
spectrum of mechanisms for approaching validation. One of
these mechanisms is based on setting up a validation step
with a validation policy. A validation policy (often referred
to as a comparison policy) encapsulates specific behavior
for comparing two objects and validating that they compare
favorably.
Test Mentor provides several validation policies for general
use. You might want to create one or more validation policies
to represent strategies for validating your particular domain
objects. If you do this, you will want those policies to appear
in the validation step configuration view as validation policy
choices. This article discusses how to add your own custom
validation policy to Test Mentor for anyone in your group
to use. For this month's full technical tip see:
